drying the harvest
i recently bought an excalibur food dehydrator. this excellent thing is a large black box, with nine square trays that slide into the front of it …then the whole thing is closed with a lid-door arrangement.no moving parts apart from the fan in the back, to keep the warm dry air circulating. i’m fascinated with [...]

furoshiki again
i just received this from an etsy seller (where else?).zabelou.it’s about the cutest thing ever.beautiful fabrics and they have a bit of body to them, so the bag has a nice fat shape when you tie it up.the bag is shipped as a flat piece of fabric; which could be alarming if you don’t know [...]

the fregie
it’s one thing to rid your life of all those plastic shopping bags and deck yourself out with gorgeous baskets and calico bags and designer market bags and so forth…but what about all those nasty little plastic bags you get your fruit and vegies in? behold the fregie.a lightweight, see-through, endlessly reusable, nylon-netting fruit and [...]

it’s like christmas
this afternoon a couple of boxes of loot arrived from the USA…..stuff we had posted home to ourselves. along with 24 litres of maple syrup (a grade, dark amber), we unpacked a couple of microplane graters….a huge copper oval roasting dish…many small solid stainless steel whisks (for soapmaking!)…a load of magnetic spice tins from IKEA….some [...]

strigils and bodyfliks
as a soapmaker, i am generally interested in bathing accoutrements. the romans had a wonderful system for cleaning their skin….they would have a session in a hot room at the baths….like a sauna or turkish bath….then they’d be massaged all over with olive oil.then they would be scraped down with a strigil, a sort of [...]

carbon credits
i have been watching a discussion online over the last few days, with keen interest. a poster named wingding has suggested that rather than purchasing carbon credits to offset the carbon emissions our businesses all inevitably produce….perhaps we should be cutting out the middleman and running our own tree-planting projects.this idea resonated with me. i [...]

christmas beetles
we’ve had the usual swarms of christmas beetles over the past month or so.Anoplognathus pallidicollis. they are attracted to the handful of small lights we have on inside in the evenings and of course, it is hot at this time of the year, so they just fly on in through the open windows and doors.usually [...]

exciting announcement
today, our soap company became officially 100% carbon neutral.we are truly excited about this, and the fact that we are the first soap company in australasia/pacific to make this step. we have been committed to finding more sustainable ways of making soap from the first day we started doing business.to this end we use 100% [...]

woodstove installed at last!
i’m toasting myself in the glow of the new woodstove/cooker! (ordered 2 months ago). it’s far better than we imagined.we can throw HUGE chunks of wood in there….and we can see the flames!it’s got more controls than the bridge of the enterprise, so controlling the heat for cooking is going to be simple. it took [...]
