korea: soapmaking workshops
Posted on | January 18, 2010 | 9 Comments
i have been invited to korea to teach a couple of advanced soapmaking workshops at a big aromatherapy college up there.
these are all aromatherapy students who have already completed a basic soapmaking workshop.
i’m not sure how many will be attending…but i’m guessing LOTS.
i’ve been working on my workshop plan and i’ll be talking a lot, plus demonstrating making 22 different types of soap over 2 days, which will give a thorough overview of how to use various ingredients and how to do different techniques for various effects.
i’ll be soaping like an absolute madwoman and talking the whole time to get through the program.
the workshops are in seoul and daegu, and the organiser has already asked me back in september.
it is quite chilly in korea right now…i hope that by the weekend, when i depart here, it will still be hovering around the current 1 C mark and not the plunging diabolical – 16 C that i noticed a couple weeks back.
i simply don’t own the right sorts of clothes for that kind of caper!
they have made moulds to my specs, which are 1/4 the size of the moulds i use here.
each will yield me 24 bars and be nice and light to handle.
i am leaving the muscles behind on this trip as it was short notice…so the mould size took some careful plotting.
overall, i am really excited about the whole project…soap AND travel, what more could i want?

hello sixtyone!
thank you for your comment.
i am so excited to be visiting korea and sharing some soap techniques and meeting new people.
you know, i live in the wet tropics and it never EVER snows here….it never even gets very cold (right now it is 1am and 24 CELSIUS)….so i am not ready for the cold.
but everyone tells me the korean hospitality is very warm, so i think i shall be ok.
if i come back in september for another workshop and you get a ticket, PLEASE come and say hello to me.
i always love to meet soapmakers!

Hiya Patti, Congrat’s on the soap teaching commission in Seoul 7 Daegu. Each and everyone of those students are receiving a huge gift – the gift of being taught the art and science of soapmaking by a madly passionate professional soapmaker >you<
Enjoy your time making soap and friendships.
Be safe out there.
Hugs, Mori

Welcome to Korea!!!
I hope you enjoy workshop with many Korean soapers & aromatherapists.
As you were informed it’s still cold around
-5C. Unfortunately weather forcast says it
will not warmer in next week ,
so I am worrying about cold weather might
disturb soap making.
After soap reaches ‘trace’, heat insulation
is very important under this cold temperature.
Anyway I am happy to see you next week.

hi edmond!
yes, the temperatures will be a bit of a challenge to my soapmaking methods.
where i make soap is a very different climate.
i guess i will have to move fast, get the soap covered, and perhaps stack the moulds to keep them nice and warm.
maybe use some blankets to keep them cozy!
i am very much looking forward to the workshops, meeting everyone and exchanging ideas! thank you for your welcome!

awww thanks sweetie. i’ve been thinking about you a lot as the olympics approach. we could have been drinking mulled wine and watching skating and having an absolute hoot.
