wednesday night soapmaking and win a couple of bars!
Posted on | October 8, 2009 | 56 Comments
feeling quite creatively stimulated after a fabulous theatre experience last night, i came home and had a bit of a look around my stash of ingredients and decided to make some completely new bars.
there are no photos until after the weekend….i am having a temporary camera fail.
soap 1…..i haven’t named it yet, but i was going for something soft, warm, sweet and comforting.
it contains : maple syrup and goatsmilk, with vanilla-y benzoin and iron-distilled patchouli.
i gave it a white swirl through it’s pale caramelly body, and a dusting of cocoa powder for a bit of dimension.
it’s beautiful and my clothes and hair are sweet with benzoin and patchouli splashes and fumes.
soap 2….i had some sandalwood powder loitering about. it is finely ground and tightly sealed in a dark glass jar and it has been on my shelf for at least six years.
i opened the jar and the aroma of sandalwood came pouring out….quite extraordinary.
hmmm, i wanted to mix that with some silk and coconut cream and spice spice spice.
it has a decadent essential oil blend of orange, petitgrain, patchouli, ginger, black pepper, cinnamon, benzoin and clove…..i drizzled a thick white frosting onto a base that was so rich and over the top that it was heating up madly in the mould seconds after pouring and throwing out the most incredible scent……i really hope that sandalwood note survives the process!
i finished it with a scattering of fine black tea.
i cannot wait to cut them and photograph them.
updated with pics!
i am temporarily out of original gorgeous evocative soap names.
if you would like to win a bar of each soap, then please read the descriptions and leave your name suggestions in the comments section here.
i’ll pick my favourite names within the next week or so and send the winner/s a bar of each of the soaps.

They both sound deliriously delicious.
I’ve got nothing on the first, but the second one sings Pastiche to me.

Need to get my brain in gear.
October 11th, 2009 @ 10:26 PM
For the first: crema della mandorla (almond cream)
Stuck on the second but trying to focus on the aged sandalwood, but that would exclude the other wonderful stuff in there…but I did like:

okay, no coffee yet, so this is my brain on drugs.
for #1 – momijigari, after the japanese tradition of watching the changing colors of maple leaves in the autumn. i know this is a stretch, but i can’t see a bandi soap named “granny’s kitchen” and i’m still waiting for the coffee to kick in so i may have gone too far in the other direction.
for #2 – zanzibar, mostly for the pepper and the clove. (it’s where Freddie Mercury was born, too, which is odd, isn’t it?)

Good luck with choosing a name. I always find it hard to find a name that “feels” right, but it is also a lot of fun looking for the right one.

I like Manabush which is from Algonquian mythology. “In the beginning, Nokomis (Mother Earth) was the first to tap holes in maple trees to collect maple syrup directly, until her grandson Manabush told her that men would become lazy if they could collect this exquisite sugar so easily without any work. He first tried to convince his grandmother that men should work to obtain it by cutting wood, starting fire and staying up all night to boil the maple sap and watch it turn into syrup and sugar. But fearing his grand-mother would not take action, he himself climbed to the top of a maple tree with a bucket of water, pouring it inside the tree to dissolve its sugar concentration. Ever since, according to that legend, men have to work hard to obtain maple syrup.”
October 12th, 2009 @ 3:10 PM
For the second (Sandalwood, silk, & spice) I like Chandana which is based on Indian mythology. “Sandalwood is considered the epitome of excellence, imparting fragrance even to the axe that cuts it. For this reason anything that is excellent is referred to as chandana”.
October 12th, 2009 @ 3:29 PM
More names for the second soap – Mysore (which is famous for it’s sandalwood and silk), or Ganesha from Indian mythology on Sandalwood (popularly known as Chandan)”According to legend, Lord Ganesha was created by Goddess Parvati out of sandalwood paste that she used for her bath and breathed life into the figure”.
