CWA….malanda branch, and some laundry soap

i just received a lovely handwritten note thanking me for a soapmaking demonstration i did at our local CWA (country woman’s association for our international readers).
it’s such a shock to get something handwritten in these electronic cyberised word-processed days, isn’t it?

i went down there some weeks ago and showed the ladies how to make a basic laundry soap.
this one is very simple and you can make it with ingredients from the supermarket.
it makes a terrific stain treatment or pre-soak additive.
i like to cut it into sticks, that you can hang onto and really rub into stains.

you’ll need:
500 grams coconut oil (2 blocks of copha)
500 lard (look for the allowrie brand)
80 grams eucalyptus essential oil
160 grams caustic soda
310 grams water

please look up basic soapmaking directions online or in a reputable book.
weigh everything….these are not volume measurements.

this will make just over a kilo of fabulous white rock hard laundry soap.
it is not a good bath soap….it’s been formulated with no superfat, so it won’t be very skin-friendly.
it is for attacking stains, more than anything.

the ladies asked me is it actually economical to make your own soap?
the short answer is no.
on a small scale, it isn’t cheaper to make your own.
however, the quality is far superior to most commercial brands.
and some of us really like to control what ingredients go into the stuff we use every day.

I agree – making your own laundry soap is definitely rewarding and sadly, you’re right, not always as cost effective as the big batch, phosphate laden commercial products but I do love doing exotic fragrances in my laundry. =)
