in the garden this month…..

1. the brazilian cherries have been ready to eat. i keep announcing that i’ll be making jelly….but i keep eating them right off the tree.
they are tart, sweet and have a slightly resinous/camphorous note to them that is quite addictive.
and they look so cute….like tiny little chinese lanterns, in green, then orange and red.
2. the mulberries are finished.
delicious, but brief. note to self: do not leave home from late august to mid-september.
3. the lettuces and rocket are now going to seed almost immediately from seedlings…..it’s too hot for them now.
it’s a bummer….we are all hooked on crispy fresh just-picked greens around here.
4. i think i have to move my herb garden. it needs some shade at this time of year. it’s in a crazy hot windswept area…..which is sadly, most of the property until some of these bazillions of little trees get another year or two’s growth on them.
moving gigantic terracotta pots is going to require buttering up the husband.
5. we have been spending hours each day hand-watering. it is completely hot and dry and windy. and now the bushfires on the gillies range have gotten a grip and it’s hazy to boot.
the goal is to keep the small things alive until the wet season begins. and then mother nature can take over again.
