more persephone books! and some cooking.

i’m so excited…i’ve just ordered two more persephone books:
miss pettigrew lives for a day
and
plats du jour
won’t plats du jour be a treasure trove?
i’m dying to compare it to elizabeth david’s french provincial cookery, which is my father’s favourite cookbook (if anyone ever mentions cooking a chicken, no matter what part or what style, he asks if there is tarragon. i blame ED’s influence).
i have a ravishingly beautiful copy of FPC, given to me by one of my gorgeous friends….it’s a folio society copy, a hardback with it’s own case, with beautiful endpapers and illustrations.
my kitchen was finished this week after a harrowing eight week renovation.
it is looking just perfect for our rural shed house….rustic massive slabs of polished timber, mini-orb, open shelving, stainless steel racks with tools hanging off hooks and everything within easy reach.
it’s a little unconventional perhaps, but it’s extremely easy and enjoyable to work in.
i’ve got so much more space than previously….it’s delightful.
i’ve been spending every spare minute in there, enjoying the ambiance and doing a lot of cooking.
stocks and soups and breads and cakes and rotisserie chickens, mainly.
our garden is still producing tons of zucchini, but we are managing.
we had friends up from cairns for dinner and we had cream of zucchini soup, followed by roasted zucchini/garlic among other fresh local vegetables and chicken, then my lemon sour cream cake with cream.
i have a choc zucchini loaf recipe somewhere but that is for when i get desperate.
the silverbeet is producing wildly too…..i steamed some, then added a dash of cream, salt, pepper, a tiny bit of mixed spice….it was delicious.
we’ll just be over that and the peas and beans will begin.
there is never a lack of fresh greens at this time of year up here.
i just wish we could grow decent tomatoes.
i must try out that upside down tomato technique someone kindly showed me online a few weeks ago.
one last thing:
if you are looking for talc-free dusting powder in original scents, then do try superbad.
groovy packaging, with the naughty black lace motif; entirely handmade; woman-owned; and really good product at good prices.
i’m loving my dusting powder and the roll-on perfume.
