persephone books

i’ve just discovered persephone books.
and i am besotted.
what an absolute treasure trove of quiet little literary gems.
they are all paperbacks with a nice firm smooth dustjacket of pale gray and a simple, discreet cream & black spot on the cover for the title and author.
inside, in complete contrast, are gorgeous endpapers in riotous colours and patterns, all carefully chosen for their relevance to the story or the author.
i ordered two and they arrived here on wings.
first up, i scared myself with the victorian chaise-longue.
it was a quick and unforgettable read.
now i am thoroughly enjoying good evening mrs craven: the wartime stories of mollie panter-downes (what an extraordinary name).
i cannot tell you how gorgeous these are….i just love them.
a little later, by another post, the persephone catalogue arrived.
now it is sitting on my desk, making beguiling eyes at me (a bit like norbulinkga really).
it is useless to go through and mark off the titles i really really want, because i really really really want them ALL.

If you are ever in London you have to visit their shop, it is a wonderful little place with old chairs to sit on, vases of flowers and piles and piles of books.
