lotion-making with a steripen
Posted on | May 28, 2009 | No Comments
i make various lotions (usually the good old olive oil and honey) for myself and some friends, but i don’t sell it per se.
i’ve never really looked into bulk-lotion-making equipment or supplies….my needs really are modest.
one of the big drags with lotion-making is the necessity of keeping everything as sanitised as possible.
oil and water mixtures are tasty bug food and nobody wants to see mould growing in their gorgeous creamy organic olive oil face cream.
one step involved in the killing off any microbes lurking about is to heat and hold your water phase to a prescribed temperature, for a prescribed length of time.
of course, while this is happening, water is evaporating and your formula is being messed with and you have to adjust and make allowances and it is all such a drama that i don’t make lotion commercially, as i said.
recently, i purchased a steripen, from a friend, who also likes travelling to places where the local tap water will kill you if you look at it too thirstily. (if she was still blogging, this would be the perfect place for a link, would it not?).
the steripen is sitting on my desk, so i can show it off to visitors and get myself used to the idea that in just a few weeks time, i shall be turning on actual household taps in indonesia, running the water, immersing the steripen for a minute, then drinking the water! with my own mouth!
i have a relevant cautionary indonesian tap water tale, but i don’t think it is suitable for publishing on this nice blog.
i’ll draw a discreet veil over all that for my gentle readers.
but i digress…
the steripen!
could it not be used to wipe out all known viruses, bacteria, protozoa and any other wrigglies from water i intend to use for lotion-making?
it seems worth a shot, does it not?
stay tuned.
