retirement? pish posh!

i had a thoroughly unpleasant dose of reality recently.
my WONDERFUL bookkeeper, lynn, who has nursed me through three businesses over the last 12 years (a year each in various terrible catering enterprises and the current seven-and-a-half-years of fooling about with soap), casually mentioned how she’ll be retiring next july.
i absolutely freaked out all over her front lawn.
next july? as in THIRTEEN MONTHS HENCE?
yes.
she claims she’ll be seventy years old. (i did cater her sixtieth birthday and i can only vaguely recall it, so it is probable that she is telling the truth. however, the woman looks late forties and always has done).
i say, age is no excuse. pish posh!
she thinks she wants to travel!
i say sure, go ahead, she can travel; but she has to be back here for a week once every quarter, so she can prepare my BAS for the GST!
i can’t possibly switch bookkeepers now!
she’s just got me nicely trained!
she understands me!
i can assure you i am not exaggerating (much) the shock i feel.
lynn is an integral part of my team.
i feel as though one of my arms has cheerily announced that it’s off to corfu for a few months.
she’s been my bookkeeper since before i could even really afford a bookkeeper.
she got me my current accountant, when my last accountant turned eighty five and started losing paperwork (i am NOT JOKING).
all i can do is pray that the three month travel bites will indeed be an attractive option and that she’ll keep my fuss-free account going as a sideline.
i mean, how does one just up and retire?
personally, i’ve got NO retirement plans beyond doing just what i am doing right now.
making soap, cooking, travelling, blogging.
maybe with a fancier camera.
lynn, how about a camera instead?
