vegetarian. sorta.

i’ve always known the following, but it didn’t really seem real and solid to me until we traipsed around india for a while: there is no way this planet can sustain 6 billion meat-eaters.
we traveled through a lot of sparse and barren desert that was supporting teeming hordes of folks on a largely vegetarian diet.
i just got the sense that while there was enough milk/ghee/paneer to go around, eating the beef would have been like killing the golden goose. i mean cow.
the same for chicken….why kill a chook for eating today, when you can have eggs for a whole year?
i’ve had my vegetarian phases in the past and even owned a vegetarian take-out shop at one stage…at least i know how to cook without meat and not die of malnutitrition. or boredom.
my immediate challenge is to see how long i can fool my non-blog-reading friends….the ones who eat here.
how long will it be until one of them says, hey! where’s the beef?
i arrived home and was strangely disinclined to meat.
i saw an advertisement about the environment and greenhouse gases and vegetarianism and didn’t roll my eyes.
so, i’m ready.
my fridge is full of vegetables.
it’s avocado season….always makes it easier to be vegetarian when the avocados are good and cheap.
i’ve got a 5 kilo block of biodynamic paneer chopped up in my freezer.
let’s get cooking.
