the six wives of henry 8th

having recently greedily consumed all ten episodes of the first fabulous season of the tudors, i was inspired to pull out my copy of the six wives of henry 8th, by paul rival.
i just wanted to do some fact-checking…the tudors is gorgeous and opulent and sexy and based in fact, but some of it is blatant fiction.
henry’s sister, margaret, suffocating her ugly old portuguese king of a husband after 3 days is a total piece of fluff…..but fun for tv of course.
i’d forgotten how wonderfully the book is written….paul rival spins a colourful tale and fleshes out his dry historical facts with some lovely lyrical bits and some very french wit and drollery.
he talks about the english going crazy with joy at the prospect of waging war on the french….i sense some tres amusant there.
none of it has interfered with my enjoyment of the tudors and like everyone else, i am panting for the second series.
it will be available dec 31st!
