narita

we arrived in narita in the evening after an unventful flight and pretty much vanished into various hotel rooms to recuperate and prepare for the slightly longer narita-seattle leg.
in the middle of the night, tokyo was hit with a reasonable-sized earthquake, which, woke my husband with rattling glass and shaking bed for a minute or two.
somehow, i manged to sleep through the entire thing….i always miss earthquakes.
we met up with mum for breakfast and then the three us went off to the narita-san temple.
nobody remembered to carry a camera and i am so annoyed with us!
the temple was huge, hundreds of years old, set in beautiful grounds, and quite unlike anything i’ve ever seen before.
in a weird way though it was all oddly familiar…..from decades of japanese movies and tourist photos.
we scooped water from a stone trough with bamboo scoops, and washed our hands and mouths at the temple entrance.
we saw buddha’s slippers and gorgeous formal gardens and enormous brass braziers in the courtyard, filled with bundles of incense.
the air was heavy with humidity and heat and it was very quiet.
i’m used to the throng and jostle and racket of thai and balinese temples….this was a very different and lovely experience.
there was very little signage in english, so i really cannot tell you much more.
