the elysian

after fifteen hours en route, all throught the night….chiang mai: bangkok: jakarta: ….we finally arrived in my beloved bali.
there MUST be a direct flight from chiang mai to bali….i’ll be checking it out soon.

we were met at the airport by bored officials who didn’t even want to check our duty free vodka or green tea….just waved us through casually and humourously.
it’s great to be back.

as soon as we emerged, we were snapped up by the driver for the elysian.
he took us out to an airconditioned, leather-lined kijang and then gave us chilled towels and glass bottles of water.
after fifteen hours of flying and airports, you can imagine how grateful we were.

the elysian itself is in seminyak, about 15-20 mins from the airport.
it is a hotel comprised of 26 private villas, with their own walled garden and swimming pool.
everything in each villa is beautifully designed, functional, synmpathetic, intuitive, luxurious.
it is very “modern balinese”.
we’ve had exquisite, thoughtful service at every turn.

they checked us in immediately upon arrival…..we fell into the private swimming pool and spent a delicious hour unwinding there, then had showers in the massive bathroom filled with natural light, and then i read and fell asleep in one of the gorgeous daybeds, and maurice took over the bedroom.
we slept for almost 3 hours and woke refreshed, and completely over our hideous night of travel.
we love the villa so much, that we didn’t want to leave it, so we arranged for a late barbecue supper to be made beside our pool.
they arrived at 9pm with tables and barbecue and lashings of food.
we were waited on under a large frangipani tree, with banana leaf-shaded candles all around the swimming pool.
an almost full moon looked through the leafy canopy at us and we had quite a bit of a light show from plenty of lightning.
it is the tropical storm time of year….just like at home.

right now, we are in the cool and shady library….i am online and my husband is reading the bali times and telling me snippets as i type.

i believe we have lunch booked at la lucciola and dinner at ku de ta.
really, too spoilt!
