exciting announcement

Posted on | September 28, 2007 | 1 Comment

today, our soap company became officially 100% carbon neutral.
we are truly excited about this, and the fact that we are the first soap company in australasia/pacific to make this step.

we have been committed to finding more sustainable ways of making soap from the first day we started doing business.
to this end we use 100% post-consumer recycled paper for our packaging and printing; we catch our own rainwater; we use solar power; we buy clean energy from our electricity supplier; we drive a very small and fuel-friendly car; and we manufacture in a very traditional manner, all by hand.
we recycle our oil containers (the local farmers cannot get enough of our plastic and metal buckets!) and re-use all of our incoming packaging.

even with conscious recycling and reduction, there is still a certain amount of unavoidable activity in our business that produces greenhouse gases.
car travel, air travel, waste disposal, freight.
our activities have been measured and we have purchased carbon credits to offset/neutralise our emissions.

we have done this with the help of the good people at climate friendly
this is what they do, from their website:

Our commitment is to fund projects that:

* address the root cause of climate change: fossil fuel emissions
* prevent greenhouse emissions (i.e. keep carbon in the ground)
* are additional (i.e. go beyond business as usual)
* are independently verified for quality
* have a ‘real time’ impact (i.e. they neutralise your emissions close to the time you emit them).

New energy

When we invest in projects on your behalf, we choose only clean energy that comes from sites built after 1997. We do not buy ‘old’ renewable energy, from project sites possibly built up to 50 years ago, because our goal is to build demand for new renewable energy. This demand will result in more projects dedicated to renewable energy, and the growth of the renewable, clean energy industry, which will really help to slow global warming.

I have to say Kudos to you! I can’t imagine the amount of time and personal energy it takes to make sure you don’t leave behind a carbon footprint! Congratulations. I can only say that I don’t think I could do it!
