woodstove installed at last!

i’m toasting myself in the glow of the new woodstove/cooker! (ordered 2 months ago).

it’s far better than we imagined.
we can throw HUGE chunks of wood in there….and we can see the flames!
it’s got more controls than the bridge of the enterprise, so controlling the heat for cooking is going to be simple.

it took 3 men 3 hours to get it off the truck and into our home. (about eight feet).
lots of grunting and shoving and levering and block and tackle work and steel rollers and swearing.
it weighs 190 kilos and it was BOLTED to the pallet it was shipped on.

then we realised it wouldn’t fit the current flue.
they stopped making that particular size adaptor yeeeeaaarrrrssss ago. of course.
so we had to cough up for a whole new stainless steel flue kit.
(but it looks so nice and shiny!).

then we lost a day due to rain, because extra holes have to be cut into the roof.
then it was the weekend.
finally, today i telephone the bloke in the late morning and tell him i fully intend to be cooking by tomorrow.
he comes over, on my sworn word that it will not rain on him.
naturally, as soon as he rips the roof up, the skies open…

however, he perseveres and gets it’s all finished.
and discovers in the meantime that our shed-house has a roof full of asbestos.
no wonder it’s cosy in here.
oy vey.

after a false start, i got the baffle installed and got the fire going.
after the tiny, rusty, crumbling potbelly we’ve used for the last 3 years, this thing is simply DELUXE-O.

it’s a thermalux gourmet cooker woodstove and i cannot wait to bake bread in it.
right now it is a little bit fume-y, burning off the “finish”.
i’m helping that with some loose incense of frankincense, myrrh, sandalwood chips, thyme, rosemary, and cinnamon.

    Sounds fantastic!

Jon surprised me with a new woodstove while I was in Vietnam last year. It’s a beautiful gray and black soapstone stove. Ours isn’t for cooking, just heating, but it literally payed for itself in one winter since we went through about 1/8th of the oil we would normally use.

    ENJOY!!

Oh come on! You can’t write a story like that about a wood cooker and not have pictures!
    Let’s see it :)
