a regime for broken bones

Posted on | June 30, 2007 | No Comments

i’ve been reading up on broken collarbones and it has alarmed me more than somewhat to learn that clean snaps (such as maurice has), have a 10% chance of non-union.
ie, they don’t knit back together again on their own and require surgery and pinning and so on.
nobody around here is very keen to see that happening, so we have swung into an offensive action to head off the possibility of non-union.

the way i see it, he needs extra calcium, extra vitamin D, extra circulation and extra rest.

i’m making yoghurt daily and chopping forests of fresh parsley and making loads of salmon salads.
he’s eating double and triple his usual amount of raw almonds….we always have them in the fridge….and i’m laying in a supply of brazil nuts too.

i’ve got heaps of comfrey growing and he had a poultice of that all day yesterday and all last night and he says he can feel “activity” in the poulticed area.
he is going to stay poulticed for the next two weeks at least.

he’s spending fifteen minutes a day in early morning sunshine, with no sunblock or sunglasses….to soak up the vitamin D.

and we are taking walks morning and evening, to keep his circulation, circulating.

he’s one of these tough dudes with a very high pain threshold and a freakishly fast recovery rate in general.
i remember seeing him with kitchen-induced cuts and burns that would heal almost while you watched them.

today i have a helper assisting me with cutting soap.
maurice is very hard to replace!
i’m having to call in help from all over!
