my old soap guy arrived very early this morning and we eased ourselves into a full 1500 bar session, with copious amounts of cafe lattes, and later cups of tea…..brought over to the workshop by the one-armed barista.
soap guy and i haven’t worked together for a long long long time, so it took all morning to get back into each other’s tempo.
we finished fairly late, but all the soap is in the moulds and he is weighing up for the next session already.
he has been working as a roofing contractor for the last six months.
a couple of weeks ago, he fell off a roof and hurt his back quite badly.
five days off work, flat on his back in bed….and this is a guy who enjoys hard physical work.
he said he nearly went out of his mind.
last monday was his first day back.
by weds he was up on a terrible old roof….a 5 metre drop with no scaffolding or safety measures of any kind and he said the old trusses swayed 15-20 cm each way when he stepped upon them.
he told the boss he just couldn’t do that roof.
the boss sent him home to think about it.
he thought about it, considered that he had lost his nerve for roofing and called back on thursday to quit.
on friday morning i phoned him, frantically looking for someone with his particular skill set to work for the next month.
