Ars Moriendi- how to die in a propper [sic] way
i discovered this quite by accident.
as a soapmaker, i found “J is for James….” especially poignant.
it reminded me instantly me of a ghoulish little book i’ve had for years: quake, quake, quake: a leaden book of english verse.
same grim little B&W pics and same grim little ideas.
lo and behold, upon googling, i find that edward st john gorey (gorey by name, gory by nature) is author of both items.
(what on earth did i do all day before google, i have no idea).
p.s. ars moriendi is latin for “the art of dying”.
i didn’t know we had to make an art out of it.
can’t we just DO it?
it’s all too exhausting to have to plan.
surely we’ve earned our rest by that stage?

Oooh, thankyou for reminding me of the Tinies! Poor little James- it really does get you *right there*, doesn’t it?
Personally, I have no plans for death- apart from trying to evade it for the next 50 years or so.

The reference to James makes me giggle.
I will always think of the English-man named James.
