my first ever customer

my first ever customer is a local guy, named daniel.
he stopped by my market table, as i was setting up at 6.30am in mid-december 2001, and bought a bar of soap.
i told him: you are my very very first ever customer, thank you!
he has used my soap exclusively for the last 5.5 years and he still gets it from me at the same market.
he stopped by today and stocked up again.
it always gives me such a thrill.
i love all my die-hard, loyal customers.
i hear about their lives, their work, their kids and their travels, in between discussing soaps and essential oil preferences.
i’ve seen them get married, have babies, watched the babies start school.
they are the most incredibly varied bunch of people!
in between the doctor’s wives and society ladies, i have mad bikers covered in tatts and dreadlocks….big tough guys who work for the navy shooting pirates….hippie chicks…a man with his own commercial cleaning company…..ambulance drivers….university students…backpackers….journalists….chefs….bankers….a man who commutes around the world to do “something” in africa and won’t leave town without a stash of soap….a guy with 35 piercings and when he is normally clothed, you can only see 11 of them….and even a few beauty therapists.
these people are all such interesting and vibrant people and knowing that they are my audience really pushes me to keep the standard high.
some of them had never ever used handmade soap before trying mine.
others have been aficionados of handmade soap for years.
some bought it initially for the novelty, but stayed to become real customers when they felt and saw the benefits to their skins.
several very no-nonsense, straight-up types have confided that the scent of the soap makes them feel very nurtured and relaxed…..ahhh, that is aromatherapy at it’s finest! working quietly and without fuss.
i’m often told i’d better not quit ever making soap, because they couldn’t stand it.
i have some customers who obviously do without other things in order to buy my soap.
and i have some customers who could buy anything in the whole world, but they choose my soap.
both groups make me feel humble and grateful.
i don’t know much about daniel….he isn’t a chatterer….but i’m always delighted to see him and i know for a fact that he has wonderful skin!
