pre-mother’s day

much excitement in the back blocks last night!

we had a late lunch and no dinner…..a fire roaring in the potbelly stove, cups of tea and were getting settled in to watch LOST. (pathetic, but we are addicted).

at 7.50pm, i was ironing some of the mountain of linen that reaches to the ceiling and husband was watching the news, when we heard the most revolting sound.
i just cannot describe it.
we looked outside and a transformer on a power pole across the road from us was fizzing and popping and exploding all over the place.
it went bang, all the lights went out and then fiery stuff began to drip to the ground.
it was somewhat alarming.
within a minute or two, we had candles lit, and torches located and were phoning the electricity people on the vintage red phone with round dial, which is the only phone that will work during power cuts these days, due to having no fancy electrically-run gizmos.

i got a message….press 1 now if you are in a life-threatening emergency, press 2 if you are not.
i dialled two.
it puts me through to the life-threatening emergency people!
i quickly explained to the operator that it looked terrible, and we could see that kilometres around us had no electricity, but my old phone had put me through to her.
she took my call, got address etc and within 10 minutes, a fire truck was here, plus a couple of carloads of fire-support guys, who blocked off the road because a powerline had in fact fallen across the road.

eventually the electricity guys turned up, but by this time, husband had hooked up the generator and powered on the tv.
we watched LOST…..some questions were answered, but NOT ENOUGH….and turned in.

at 12.25am, the electricity came back on and i woke with my bedside light glaring into my eyes and the sound of the computer roaring into life.
turned it all off, got back to sleep.
woke at 2am with sounds of cats having trouble with the catdoor because of the generator cable running through it.
got back to sleep to wake at 4am for the market.

and what a busy market it was!
every man and his dog was out shopping for his mother.
i swapped soap for two ENORMOUS and beautiful bouquets of flowers for mother and MIL.
flower man was as happy as i was.
said his women were sick to death of flowers and loved soap instead.
i could hardly keep my eyes open all day and what is more, i’m going back for more tomorrow.
i sold bath salts and clay milk baths.
it was all very brisk.
and i managed to get some decaf coffee beans freshly-ground, for the week.
regular coffee is beginning to play havoc with my heart rate and adrenalin levels.
i’ve always enjoyed coffee for the aroma, the flavour, the ritual….far more than the caffeine rush.
we get ours from the mareeba coffee works: http://www.arabicas.com.au/

and so, to bed.
